Star Trek: By Fans for Fans

USS Enterprise

After recent comments from J.J. Abrams stating that hardcore fans should probably “stay home,” it kinda got me thinking… For those that feel that the new Star Trek is all flash and very little substance there’s actually a lot of good, easily accessible fan made creations which aren’t all that bad. So if you’re one of those hardcore Trekkers that know you’ll hate this new movie, screw Paramount, sit back, and check out some of these cool creations.

Star Trek: Phase II

Formerly New Voyages, this series decided to continue the Enterprise’s original 5 year mission with new actors. James Crawley who plays Captain Kirk does a brilliant Kirk/Shatner homage as does every single other member of the cast. And before you start thinking that this is another crappy production shot in somebody’s basement, please note that TOS series writer D.C. Fontana contributed a script and actors Walter Koenig, George Takei and Grace Lee Whitney have also all made appearances.

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men

This web miniseries is made by both fans and many of the actors and writers from a variety of Trek incarnations. The series is directed by Tim Russ of Voyager, and amongst the cast (although not all are reprising their original roles) are Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Grace Lee Whitney, Garrett Wang and Ethan Phillips. Even James Crawley makes an appearance in this miniseries event. This production event was timed for the franchises 40th Anniversary and is considered by many as a gift back to the fans.

Star Trek: Intrepid

Intrepid is another fan produced series, this time filmed in Scotland and based around the voyages of the USS Intrepid. The series has gotten quite a bit of coverage in the press and for good reason; it actually boasts some pretty cool CGI. Intrepid takes place a few years after the events of Nemesis and follows the crew of the Intrepid in the Charybdis Sector.

And if that isn’t enough for ya, Trekkers in the Pacific Northwest can experience Star Trek live outdoor theatre via Trek in the Park in Portland and Outdoor Trek in Seattle.
