Community Review: Basic Human Anatomy
The body switching episode.
Best Moment: Hands down Annie’s reaction to Jeff inside the Dean. It’s pretty messed up, but I laughed out loud at her sudden attraction to him.
Verdict: I’m very conflicted with this episode. As a body-switching episode, it was total fun. Donald Glover and Danny Pudi both were on top of all the little physical nuances of the other’s character. They really played that up well. I loved Jeff’s tour through the school with the janitor’s murder mystery game. That was pretty funny because it seems like one of those weird scenes Dan Harmon would include. And I’ve already said that I loved the scenes with the Dean pretending to be Jeff and leaving Annie’s heart aflutter.
Yet still, there is a lot of problems with the episode. Problem number one being that nobody really cares about Britta and Troy’s relationship. The relationship was never properly introduced to the audience that when it ended you shrug your shoulders. Like Britta and Troy themselves, we the audience are surprised they’ve been together a year. Considering last week’s episode of Community was a Christmas episode, that’s a weird, funky timeline.
Then there’s the fact that the Freaky Friday bit wasn’t actually Abed’s idea but Troy’s. It’s an interesting notion, but at the same time, it seems so out of character for Troy. Even more out of character is Britta’s reaction to it. Whatever Troy’s mixed feelings are, having Abed do the dumping is not cool, and Britta’s reaction to it, while sweet, just seemed way off base even for the emotionally messed up Britta.
Still, like I said, this was a funny episode. I laughed much harder at this episode than the previous two. Plus, the tag with the fake outtakes was pretty hilarious. I don’t know what will happen with the show, but I am gonna miss Troy and Abed’s antics.
