Community Review: Intro to Felt Surrogacy

Rating: ★★★½☆

After a mysterious incident causes the study group to be uncomfortable around each other, Dean Pelton uses puppets to help discuss the issue.

Best Moment: I loved all of Donald Glover’s scenes with his puppet. And I really loved how Chang’s puppet tries to reveal that he isn’t what he seems. But I cracked up at the end with the disturbing scene of Jeff’s puppet, lifting weights.

Verdict: Hmm, I’m not sure how I feel about this episode. Overall, it was enjoyable. There were plenty of laughs, but…. something seemed missing. When I heard the Community writers were going to do a puppet episode, I was so excited. I loved the claymation episode, and one of my all time favourite episodes of Angel is Smile Time. Yet…. Intro to Felt Surrogacy just didn’t work for me.

The reason for the puppets was fairly loose, but that’s okay, any excuse to have puppets. I liked the jokes. Britta saying how Annie’s skin was so soft- like felt, that was hilarious. Yet it just seemed off. Part of it was the music. The songs weren’t particularly inspired. Also, the hot air balloon adventure isn’t exactly like going to Christmas land. And the reasons the gang were embarrassed, well, they weren’t all that interesting. Whereas Abed’s mental breakdown after his mother said she’s spending the day with her new family packed a huge punch, there just wasn’t anything like that.

So even though I thought it was a pretty funny episode, it seemed weak. More of an excuse to do an episode with puppets versus really doing something new with the characters. I will say that the puppets were impressive. Hand-puppet Jeff’s chest piece was hysterical. The actors interacting with their own puppets really was far more interesting than the flashbacks with the puppets. By the way, in case any of you thought it was odd that Pierce in human form was nowhere to be seen, that’s because this was produced after Chevy Chase quit Community. I understand this was the last filmed episode, so we should still get more Pierce for the final few episodes at least.
