Inter-Galaxy Portal News RoundUp 28th June 2013

Joss Whedon Saturn awards
How has your week been? Aside from a trip to the EMP Museum last week, it’s been relatively quiet for us. We did sit down and watch Warm Bodies the other night. I really enjoyed it. Is it a great movie? No. But it has a lot of promise, and was a nice spin on the zombie theme, not to mention the teen supernatural romance theme. This past week I went digging into the archives and pulled out a list I made nearly five years ago on Dystopic Novels. I also interviewed the owners of Otherworlds and contributed an article to their newsletter. We’re actually cooking up a new plan for content with Otherworlds that really excites me. It’ll mean talking to more geeks and sharing their stories. More to follow soon!!

Much to my chagrin, major news last week came out after our news round up was published, and that was that Robert Downey Jr. has offically signed on to play Tony Stark in Avengers 2 and 3. We’re really excited about this because, let’s face, RDJ is Iron Man as far as we’re concerned.

More movie news, it looks like the Independence Day 2 sequel is definitely a go. Both Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum will be back for the sequel, but alas no Captain Steve Hiller. Apparently Will Smith is too expensive.

Citing the Sandy Hook school shootings, Jim Carrey is distancing himself from publicity for Kick-Ass 2.

The Saturn Award winners were announced. Joss Whedon took home a best director award for The Avengers. Cabin in the Woods also got an award for best horror film. Other award winners included Jennifer Lawrence for The Hunger Games, Clark Gregg for The Avengers, Anne Hathaway for The Dark Knight Rises and Frankenweenie for best animated film. Oddly, Breaking Bad also took several awards. Does that mean it counts as scifi? Wish I’d known that. I’d love to review it here since it is one of my favourite shows. You can check out a complete list at SFX.
